Full-Time Vice President, Personal Insurance, Product and Underwriting
Founded in 1871, Economical Mutual Insurance Company (“Economical”) is one of Canada’s leading property and casualty insurers, with more than $2.5 billion in annualized premium volume and approximately $5.9 billion in assets as of September 30, 2019. Based in Waterloo, this Canadian-owned and operated company services the insurance needs of over one million customers across the country. Economical is pursuing demutualization — the process to become a public company. Demutualization is an exciting and historic opportunity for Economical as it will be the first demutualization of a P&C company in Canada. The demutualization will also provide Economical the ability to gain access to the capital to further invest in business and innovation, acquire other companies, and strengthen the organization’s financial position for long-term success.
The Vice President, Personal Insurance Product and Underwriting role (“Vice President, Underwriting”) is an exceptional opportunity to make a critical contribution to Economical’s transformative growth plan as it pursues the path of becoming a public company. Reporting to the Executive Vice President, Personal Insurance (“EVP, Personal Insurance”), the Vice President, Underwriting will contribute to strategically shaping and driving Economical’s personal lines product and underwriting direction. She/he will ensure Economical’s underwriting function is optimized and expansion-ready, and champion underwriting process innovation and new product development. She/he will prepare and motivate the team in advance of, during and after the Initial Public Offering (“IPO”), will assist in integrating acquisitions and will lead regular communications internally and externally for the personal lines business.
Results driven, the Vice President, Underwriting will lead the personal insurance team through Economical’s journey, instilling a ‘can-do’ culture of transparency, collaboration, velocity and ownership. She/he has a proven history of advising senior leadership in a risk sensitive environment, and is knowledgeable in how to get things done through both formal and information channels. She/he implements strategic business initiatives and ensures operational excellence while significantly and positively contributing to Economical’s culture, all the while ensuring its growth and continued transformation. The Vice President, Underwriting brings 10 – 15 years of leadership experience in insurance and/or financial services. She/he is business savvy and financially literate, communicates complex underwriting issues with clarity, and has a strong track record of leading strategic and transformational implementations through periods of significant change. Public company experience, M&A integration as well as an MBA, CRM, CIP, FCIP, FCIA and/or a professional accounting designation are assets.
The Vice President, Underwriting can convey granular and technical underwriting details with clarity and confidence while delivering high-level external and internal messaging to all of Economical’s Senior Leadership Team, Board, stakeholders, and customers. At the same time, she/he effectively communicates Economical’s underwriting strategy and provides a high degree of confidence in the products developed. Motivated by contributing to Economical’s transformative growth plan, the Vice President, Underwriting is an exceptional opportunity for an accomplished senior executive underwriting leader to have a significant impact during Economical’s journey as a public company.
