Full-Time Senior Underwriter, Property Construction

Starr Technical Risks Canada inc. is seeking an experienced technical property underwriter for the role of Senior Underwriter, Property Construction to facilitate the growth of Starr’s builder’s risk (construction property) book of business.  This is a permanent, full time position reporting to our Toronto, Canada office located at 200 King St W Suite 1200 #16, Toronto, ON M5H 3T4, Canada.  In office reporting Monday-Friday is required for this role.

 

Duties and responsibilities of the position:

  • Solicit and review new and renewal property submission from various production sources
  • Analyze submitted documentation according to company underwriting standards and guidelines and request additional information i.e. Engineering reports, CAT modeling, etc., as needed or required.
  • Subject to written underwriting authority prepare and present quotation terms and conditions as submitted.
  • As regards quoted terms or conditions outside underwriting authority, prepare written referral document and submit for approval to appropriate authority.
  • Review and approve binding terms and conditions for new and renewal business as well as endorsements and amendments to existing policies.
  • Prepare and approve insurance details for binders and reinsurance layoff sheets for underwriting assistants, in order to book and bill new and renewal accounts.
  • Set up or review and approve policy forms for all new and renewal policies according to binding terms for policy issuance by U/A including endorsements.
  • Review and approve final bound policy terms prior to mailing to broker/client in accordance with STARR TECH underwriting standards and guidelines.
  • Prepare and approve file documentation in accordance with STARR TECH file documentation procedures.
  • Prepare various Home Office reports as requested or required.
  • Other duties as may be assigned by manager

Skills/Experience Required:

  • Good communication skills
  • 5 years plus of commercial property underwriting experience, and in particular:
  •  1) Builder’s Risk (construction property) experience
  •  2) Large commercial property underwriting experience
  •  3) Technical property underwriting experience preferably in the Oil, Gas, Petrochemical, Heavy Industrial, Infrastructure (e.g bridge, tunnel, rail, road construction) sectors
  • Post-secondary degree (Bachelor’s degree preferred)
  • Insurance designation or certificate preferred
  • Computer skills
  • Word processing, spreadsheet utilization, and slide-show assembly and presentation
  • Analytical mind
  • Creativity and adaptability
  • Service-oriented
  • Able to work in a team environment
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Travel will be necessary within the role

 

Salary range:  $110,000-$140,000

 

In addition to base salary, this position is also eligible for an annual discretionary bonus based on individual performance in the role and overall company performance.
