Full-Time Senior Commercial Lines Underwriter

Job Description

We are seeking a Senior Commercial Underwriter for our client’s Pacific Region Office (Vancouver), to manage complex property and casualty risks.

The successful candidate will work closely with stakeholders, handling underwriting submissions, managing a portfolio of accounts, and building strong relationships with clients and brokers.

The ideal candidate will be client focused, enthusiastic about meeting with clients and brokers, working with minimal supervision, and excel in a non-structured environment.

There is also the opportunity to mentor and coach junior staff, as well as grow, learn, and progress in your career path.

Key responsibilities

  • Analyze risks, assess underwriting submissions, and make sound decisions.
  • Develop, negotiate, and manage a portfolio of accounts in alignment with strategic goals.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with customers, brokers, and internal stakeholders, providing exceptional customer service.
  • Plan, prioritize, and manage individual tasks to meet agreed objectives and SLAs.
  • Operate within the Ecclesiastical framework and promptly escalate potential risks.

Knowledge, skills, and experience

  • A University degree, and CIP or equivalent.
  • Minimum of 6-8 years’ progressive experience in underwriting, with a focus on property and casualty products and success in intermediate-level roles.
  • Proficiency in underwriting tools, systems, and data analysis techniques, with an ability to evaluate risks, determine appropriate coverage, and calculate premiums.
  • Strong attention to detail, excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and effective time management skills.
  • Strong negotiation skills, adaptability to changing market conditions and underwriting guidelines, and ability to handle multiple underwriting files simultaneously.
  • Comprehensive understanding of underwriting guidelines, policy wordings, pricing tools, and the regional insurance market.
  • Help to coach and mentor Underwriters and Underwriting Associates
  • Maintain continuous learning and professional development.
  • High ethical standards, adherence to industry regulations and guidelines, and the ability to handle sensitive information discreetly.
