Full-Time Regional Underwriting Manager – Vancouver

Job Description

Department:   Eastern, Pacific, Western, Central Region and National Programs

Reports to:     Regional Vice President

Purpose of Position:

The Regional Underwriting Manager position plays a key role in the implementation of The Company’s underwriting strategy and related policies, procedures, processes, projects and services including the provision and delivery of technical underwriting training programs deemed necessary to build the core business, in addition to other related commercial property and casualty business. This position also includes specific performance management duties in respect to Regional Underwriters and Underwriting Assistants including delivering annual and mid-year performance appraisals, and providing direction, coaching and mentoring.

Key Accountabilities and Responsibilities:

People Management

Manage and monitor the performance and competency of the Regional Underwriters and Underwriting Assistants through the mid-year and annual performance management processes, tracking vacation/time away, direction, coaching and mentoring.
Evaluate the skill and proficiency levels of Underwriters within the region for each line of coverage on an annual basis, as part of the Competency Assessment Framework, to determine the competency based underwriting authority levels and to inform the performance management and behavioral competency assessment processes.
Provide input as it relates to merit adjustments and individual incentive compensation multipliers.
Provide key technical guidance and management to Regional Underwriters.
Provide technical training and other learning and development opportunities to Regional Underwriters, Underwriting Assistants and other applicable staff.
Authorize and sign off on employees’ expenses.
Coach and provide guidance to Business Interns and complete the necessary placement assessment documentation after the Business Intern has finished their rotation within the Region.
Prioritize and manage work-flow and work-load distribution.
Work with the Regional Vice President to engage and motivate the Regional team and drive a high performance culture across the Region.

Business Development

Develop and deliver flexible, specialized and bespoke underwriting solutions to key customer segments.
Identify key accounts in key customer segments working collaboratively with the broker to provide underwriting, risk control and pricing solutions which assist in ensuring a successful outcome.
Collaborate with the Corporate Underwriting team and the Operational Risk Committee on key opportunities to ensure a successful outcome is achieved based on Company’s underwriting strategy and risk appetite.
Coach Regional Underwriters on individual account underwriting solutions and acquisition strategies through the referral process.
In conjunction with the Regional Vice President effectively utilize the CRM system for prospect management

Underwriting

Implement Canada’s underwriting strategy and philosophy including communication of and compliance with Corporate Underwriting guidelines together with the effective implementation, management and monitoring of the underwriting referral process within the Region.
Manage, direct and monitor the effective underwriting and negotiating of key accounts and programs in the Region.
Ensure customer service standards are met.
In accordance with the requirements of the annual technical underwriting audit process, work closely with Corporate Underwriting to ensure compliance with underwriting guidelines and risk appetite through completion of the monthly Regional self-audit process.
Ensure that the Branch achieves a grading of “Good” or better on the annual Regional underwriting audit.
As required develop and / or deliver technical training programs to the Regional underwriters as part of Canada’s competency framework for underwriting.
As directed, participate in Corporate Underwriting technical audits of other Regions.

Customer Relationships

Build and maintain effective relationships with key customers demonstrating a clear understanding of their unique needs and developing and delivering insurance and risk management solutions to meet those needs.
Build and maintain effective relationships with all strategic and development brokers in the Region.
Promote Company’s customer-focused specialist approach to customer groups and organizations within the community by leveraging the tri-lateral business model.

Marketing

Ensure the effective communication and understanding of Company’s underwriting strategy both internally and externally within the Region including to all underwriters, risk control specialists, claims representatives, broker partners, key customers and other stakeholders.
Develop a detailed understanding of the marketplace (as it relates to our key customer segments) including all competitors in terms of their underwriting strategy, products, coverage, risk appetite and capacity / limits
Monitor legal, market, business and cultural trends relative to key customer segments; and assist Corporate Underwriting with any product enhancement and product development as requested.

Portfolio Management

Manage and monitor the quality and profitability of the Regional portfolio by utilizing all available MI.
Report quarterly to the Regional Vice President and Corporate Underwriting on the performance of the Regional portfolio by key customer segment and coverage line.
Manage key accounts including negotiation, underwriting, customer relationships, and risk control initiatives.
Working with the Regional Vice President ensure that there is a fully documented key account management strategy for all existing and prospective key accounts within the Region as part of the Regions overall business plan.

Skills, Education, Knowledge and Experience:

  • ·University degree or College diploma.
  • CIP (completed); FCIP (preferred).
  • 10+ years insurance experience (commercial property/liability).
  • 2+ years Underwriting Management experience (technical focus).
  • Experience in and exposure to complex case underwriting, product development, wording development and rate building / pricing strategy.
