Full-Time Regional Underwriting Manager – Commercial Lines

Job Description

We are seeking a Regional Underwriting Manager for our client’s Central Region Office (Toronto).

The successful candidate will hold a key leadership position within the organization, leveraging their extensive underwriting background to mentor and guide an underwriting team, ensuring effective implementation of established underwriting guidelines, best practices, and policy wordings.

The ideal candidate will be client focused, a dynamic people leader and mentor, and excels in a non-structured environment.

Key responsibilities

  • Directly mentor underwriting teams, facilitating the consistent implementation of  underwriting guidelines, policies, and best practices.
  • Oversee underwriting processes and conduct audits, fostering a culture of continuous improvement.
  • Forge robust relationships with internal teams and external stakeholders, continually reinforcing our commitment to excellent customer service.
  • Drive underwriting excellence within your team by planning, prioritizing, and managing tasks to meet agreed objectives and SLAs.
  • Adhere to and operate within the regulatory framework, proactively identifying and escalating any business risks.
  • Address any identified complaints in accordance with company policy.
  • Dedicate time to further enhance personal technical knowledge and niche expertise through networking and engagement with industry resources.

Knowledge, skills, and experience

  • Bachelor’s degree, CIP or FCIP, and CRM.
  • Significant experience in underwriting, with a significant portion of that in commercial underwriting. Previous leadership or mentorship roles are essential.
  • Proven experience in applying and implementing underwriting guidelines, best practices, and policy wordings.
  • Strong leadership skills and the ability to communicate effectively with a diverse range of stakeholders.
  • Proficiency in underwriting tools, systems, and data analysis techniques for risk assessment and to determine appropriate coverage and pricing.
  • Thorough understanding of underwriting guidelines, policy wordings, pricing tools, and the regional insurance market.
  • Ability to solve complex underwriting scenarios and adapt to changing business needs and market dynamics.
  • Adherence to high ethical standards, industry regulations and guidelines, with a capacity to handle sensitive information discretely.
