Job Description

We are seeking a Regional Underwriting Lead for our client’s Eastern Region Office (Dartmouth), to manage complex property and casualty risks.

The successful candidate will work closely with stakeholders, ensuring underwriting compliance and regional audit processes. Provide technical guidance to underwriting teams, and assist in the training and development of commercial underwriters.

The ideal candidate will be client focussed, possess strong technical underwriting skills, and excel in a non-structured environment.

 Key responsibilities

  • Maintain and build relationships with underwriting teams, brokers, and customers, providing exceptional customer service.
  • Work with the Corporate Underwriting team to ensure compliance with underwriting guidelines and risk appetite through completion of the monthly Regional self-audit process.
  • Implement the underwriting strategy and philosophy including communication of and compliance with Corporate Underwriting guidelines together with the effective implementation, management, and monitoring of the underwriting referral process within the Region.
  • Ensure that underwriting objectives are met for the portfolio of business, following Branch and Corporate policies, measures and standards for underwriting, customer service, profitability, productivity, and financial management.
  • Provide technical guidance, mentoring and performance feedback to the RVP, technical training and other learning and development opportunities to Senior Underwriters, Underwriters and Underwriting Associates and other applicable staff.
  • Evaluate the skill levels of all Underwriters within the Region for each line of coverage on an annual basis as part of the overarching competency assessment framework to determine the competency based underwriting authority levels and to inform the performance management process.
  • Direct and monitor the effective underwriting and negotiating of key accounts and programs in the Region as well as, negotiate and underwrite key regional new and existing business in alignment with strategic goals.
  • Plan, prioritize, and manage individual tasks to meet agreed objectives and Service Level Agreements (SLA’s) of key accounts and programs within the region.
  • Act on individual audit results and agreed action plans within agreed deadlines to improve own performance.
  • Continuously expand personal technical knowledge and niche expertise through networking and industry resources.
  • Operate within the regulatory framework, identifying potential issues or inconsistencies, and escalating any business risks and address any identified complaints in accordance with company policy.

Knowledge, skills, and experience

  • University degree, college diploma or equivalent insurance experience
  • Insurance-related certifications, such as CIP or FCIP.
  • Minimum of 8-10 years’ experience in commercial property and casualty underwriting, with a proven record of success in a senior-level role.
  • Expertise in analyzing complex risks, creating underwriting strategies, and making informed decisions.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills with a track record of exceptional customer service.
  • Proficiency in risk assessment and to determine appropriate coverage and pricing.
  • Comprehensive understanding of underwriting guidelines, policy wordings, pricing tools, and the regional insurance market.
  • Advanced problem-solving and decision-making abilities in complex underwriting scenarios.
  • Effective time management skills, ability to handle multiple underwriting files simultaneously, and adaptability to changing market conditions.
  • Adherence to high ethical standards, industry regulations and guidelines, with an ability to handle sensitive information discreetly.
