QBE is a Global Property & Casualty Insurer operating in Canada using the Lloyd’s of London Franchise. QBE has established offices in  Toronto and Vancouver to further develop it’s business and underwrite commercial insurance business.

The Opportunity

We are looking for a Property Underwriting Manager to complement our dynamic, growing team in Toronto. As an Underwriting Manager for QBE, you will lead a team of underwriters and be responsible for setting the underwriting strategy, broker development, client retention and working closely with the other product Underwriting Managers to increase pipeline.

Responsibilities for this role include, but are not limited to:

  • Set the annual business plan for the portfolio, monitor and report on progress, identify deviations, recommend and implement remedial action to ensure delivery of the plan.
  • Ensure the team’s awareness of the business plan and its context; recommend suitable resource to deliver the plan as appropriate.
  • Manage, motivate, develop and focus the team to ensure required standards of performance, and support the continuing personal and professional development of team members.
  • Perform complex underwriting activities in accordance with all legal and regulatory requirements to ensure obligations are met.
  • Underwrite complex insurance risks in accordance with the business plan and personal authority to meet business objectives.
  • Adhere to underwriting standards, instructions and good practice to minimize risk and maximize efficiency.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders including customers, brokers, industry bodies, business partners and colleagues to maximize influence and achieve business objectives.
  • Monitor and review portfolio modelling with European Operations modelling teams.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • University Degree, College Diploma or equivalent qualification preferable, e.g. CIP
  • Minimum 10 years experience gained within the insurance industry
  • Thorough knowledge of legal and regulatory requirements
  • Use of risk profiling and pricing tools and loss models
  • Strong established customer / broker relationships
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, influencing and negotiation skill
  • Ability to analyze data and use for decision making
  • Strong attention to detail
