Principal Responsibilities:

·       Develop and execute Canada’s SME strategy

·       Systems development and oversight, including pricing models and wordings

·       Underwrite new and renewal SME business within designated underwriting authority

·       Conducting negotiations with brokers

·       Representing the Company in Canada as a key market and thought leader within the Canadian industry

·       Coordinating and collaborating with other Global business units

·       Ensure all underwriting guidelines, compliance, governance, and regulatory requirements are adhered while conducting business

·       Work to enhance Company’s Canadian pricing capability by working with the actuarial team to improve existing pricing tools as well as promoting new/different pricing methodologies

·       Work closely with the claims team in assisting the claims process where needed

·       Portfolio analysis and creating, interpreting management reports

·       Work with the Managing Director(s) of Canada in the development and implementation of business strategy

·       Train junior staff in the team and provide appropriate guidance and leadership

·       Remain up to date with legal/market developments concerning the lines of business

·       Represent the Canadian team at internal/external meetings and on internal/external committees.

·       Contribute to an inspiring team environment that enables the Company’s Canadian team to achieve its mid and long-term goals

·       Promote innovation in the team by challenging status quo and encouraging creative new ways to service  clients

·       Contribute to the development of the overall insurance industry in our chosen markets through innovation, differentiated service and technology

·       Requirement to travel

Leadership expectations:

·       This role requires established leadership capabilities, working independently to manage a segment P&L with a high level of autonomy

·       A strong vision of how the SME portfolio of business should be managed is required along with the ability to execute the vision using internal and external resources

·       Over time, this individual will build a team to support this book of business

Skills, Knowledge and Experience:

Skills

·       Professional insurance experience, focusing on SME Property and Casualty lines of business

·       SME platform systems development

·       In-depth knowledge of SME risk assessment and pricing methodology as well as proficiency in policy wording analysis

·       Strong negotiation skills and experience in negotiating terms and conditions with clients and brokers

·       Sales orientation with the ability to build sustainable relationships with clients and brokers

·       Team spirit and high level of commitment

·       Self-starter, able to operate with high level of autonomy in a fast-paced start-up environment

·       Problem solving approach with a focused, proactive, and efficient work style

Knowledge

·       Technical underwriting expertise in SME property, liability segments

·       Understanding of current leading-edge insuretech technology

·       Knowledge of actuarial pricing methodologies

·       Understanding of insurance policy wordings

·       Ability to use IT systems such as policy administration and pricing systems

·       Advanced data analytics skills

·       RIBO or equivalent license required (or to be obtained)

Experience

·       5-10+ years of experience in the commercial insurance industry

·       Prior experience in the SME space

·       Post-Secondary education experience or equivalent

·       Auto underwriting experience preferred but optional
