We are on the search for a permanent, full-time position of Manager, Underwriting.  Reporting to the Associate Vice President, Underwriting, the successful candidate will manage the day-to-day operations of the underwriting department, projects, and priorities and will contribute to the development of corporate strategy and future planning.

As Manager, Underwriting YOU Will Be Responsible For

  • Providing clear leadership and direction; managing the operations of the department monitoring key performance metrics and authorizing risks exceeding subordinates’ authorization levels.
  • Day-to-day management of department projects and priorities and for coordinating work effort with other departments.
  • Overseeing loss control operations and objectives.
  • Managing the technical and operational support and maintenance of business systems for the department.
  • Researching industry information and keeps informed on product and wording changes; providing input into development of new products.
  • Participating in the establishment of product pricing and risk selection criteria to achieve the Company’s mix of business targets and underwriting profitability objectives.
  • Collaborating with the Analytics team to ensure relevant underwriting information and business knowledge is incorporated into data analytics strategy and pricing model.
  • Analyzing reports regularly to review retention and growth trends as well as underwriting profitability across geographical regions, lines of business and by product; provides information to AVP Underwriting for further review.
  • Overseeing the optimization of department processes to create efficiencies and enhance customer experience.
  • Managing Company specific insurance needs (building, property, D&O, E&O, fidelity, etc.)
  • Resolving escalated cases; reviews files referred by the claims department and provides wording and underwriting policy interpretations.
  • Developing personal credibility with key brokers, and customers.
  • Providing support in recruiting, work assignments, professional development, and performance management of department staff.
  • Participating in strategic planning for the Company.
  • Acting as a role model who supports a delightfully simple insurance experience and a positive organizational culture.

What We Need From YOU!

  • Education: A Fellowship Chartered Insurance Professional (FCIP) designation.
  • Experience: Five or more years underwriting experience in the property & casualty insurance industry; three or more years supervising high performing teams and demonstrated ability working collaboratively with client leaders and teams.
  • Insurance underwriting acumen: Advanced knowledge of insurance underwriting principles and practices, loss control operations, business processing operations and the impact of underwriting on the business of insurance.
  • Marketing acumen: A general understanding of product research & development practices, business development and insurance distribution channels along with the ability to build strong relationships with brokers and other stakeholders.
  • Financial acumen: A good understanding of how underwriting profitability impacts overall corporate results and capital requirements. The ability to understand and interpret financial statements and participate in the business planning process.
  • Analytical skills: Ability to assess, conceptualize and solve risk and rate decisions effectively.
  • Innovative: Detail oriented with a commitment to innovation.
  • Project planning skills: Project management and coordinating skills with the proven ability to handle multiple tasks and make decisions in a rapidly changing environment. Able to set priorities for self and overall department by creating a focus, eliminating roadblocks, and knowing what will help or hinder goal accomplishment. Manages project deadlines and assigns work based on employees’ abilities and competence.
  • Technology knowledge: Strong understanding of the underwriting systems functionality and the data warehouse to assist with the development of pricing algorithms, risk selection criteria, drive new initiatives and support processing efficiencies.
  • Human resources management skills: Managerial skills including interviewing and selecting employees, providing constructive feedback, motivating, conducting performance reviews, and training and development.
  • Developing others: Practices a ‘hands-on’ approach when directing employees and empowers employees to be successful through training, developing, and coaching. Holds people accountable by ensuring that they meet individual and organizational objectives in an appropriate manner. Monitors employee development plans and ensures alignment with department and company goals.
