Primary Objectives:
The Manager, Underwriting is a dynamic leader with a passion for underwriting. The successful candidate will oversee the corporate underwriting activities of the Equipment Breakdown and Engineered Lines products to maintain product leadership, evolve and update standards and guidelines and meet business objectives. The Manager, Underwriting leads a team of underwriting professionals that proactively contribute towards product performance and innovation, risk management and pricing standards and guides them to apply innovative approaches to underwriting challenges. Additionally, the Manager, Underwriting seeks to identify underwriting opportunities that contribute towards revenue growth and market leadership for HSB Canada. This role reports to our Director, Underwriting is ideal for
an innovative thinker with a problem-solving mindset focused on enhancing HSB’s underwriting excellence.

Responsibilities:
• Monitor and adjust the ongoing appropriateness of established guidelines to ensure ongoing product performance and compliance with corporate guidelines; optimize profitable growth and deliver product improvements
• Recommend product pricing and changes based on risk profiles, rate levels, wording and underwriting standards based on financial and competitive analysis and compliance requirements
• Contribute to the development of business plans, product enhancements, services and broker intelligence.
• Perform detailed underwriting of a range of risks with a focus on identifying new opportunities.
• Lead and participate in a variety of complex projects that support the Company’s overall success.
• Pursue updates regarding macro-economic issues and regulations, industry activity and trends, and disseminate information to expand team capabilities.
• Contribute to efforts to embed our portfolio underwriting initiatives nationally and internationally.

Qualifications:
• University Degree (Finance, Engineering, Business Administration )
• CIP or enrolled in the CIP program
• 10+ years of Commercial or Personal Lines Underwriting experience with a solid understanding of product wording, rate making, reserving and risk management
• Demonstrated leadership skills including employee engagement, development and teamwork
• High level of numeric competence and excellent data gathering, manipulation and statistical skills
• An aptitude for innovative problem solving
• Excellent communication skills with the ability to simplify the complex
• Exceptional research skills and ability to develop and deliver presentations
• Exhibited ability to make decisions in a timely manner
• Self-starter in a collaborative environment able to manage and prioritize multiple projects
