Job Summary
Dalhousie Financial Services strives to provide the highest quality financial services and information to ensure the effective stewardship of University assets to the benefit of students and scholarly activities. Reporting to the Controller, the Manager, Risk & Insurance will act as subject matter expert on all insurance and risk related matters and will be responsible for developing and maintaining a comprehensive insurance program for the university. Through strategic partnerships with university stakeholders, they will work to mitigate risk to the university through procedures and effective insurance policies.

 

Key Responsibilities
    • Develop a comprehensive understanding of the unique needs and operations of University Faculties and units in order to create proactive risk management programs and implement the appropriate insurance coverages. Work closely with legal counsel, environmental health and safety, security and other offices to develop a coordinated approach to institutional risk management.
    • Lead the negotiation of annual insurance policies to ensure adequacy and comprehensiveness of coverages and mitigation of risk through the transfer of risk to insurance. Regularly review the University’s Insurance program to ensure significant risks are addressed, including new and emerging risks.
    • Advise and provide support to University leaders regarding interpretation of programs and policies designed to manage and mitigate risk.
    • Build strong working relationships and liaise with peers at other post-secondary education institutions in Canada and the U.S. to remain informed and share ‘best practices’ in insurance and risk management.
    • Review and analyze a wide variety of contracts and agreements from medium to highly-complex subject matter (including but not limited to research, supply and services, domestic and international student placements, and construction) for insurance, indemnification and risk to manage the University’s contractual liability.
    • Manage the annual insurance premiums budget and the University’s self-insured program, and manage renewals and maintenance of all university vehicle permits.

 

 

Note
The successful applicant will be eligible for hybrid work (combination of in-person work on campus and remote work) as agreed by all parties based on operational requirements and university guidelines.
Dalhousie’s vaccine mandate has been suspended at this time, and employees no longer need to provide proof of full vaccination. However, health and safety risks to our community will continue to be monitored and a vaccine mandate may be reinstated if necessary.

 

Required Qualifications
  • Undergraduate degree in business administration or other relevant field, plus minimum seven years of experience in an insurance and risk management position within a complex decentralized organization (or equivalent combination of training and experience),
  • Chartered Insurance Professional (CIP) or similar designation.
  • Proven ability to make and sustain meaningful client relationships, including but not limited to identifying opportunities to assist clients in assessing risk and implementing appropriate risk management and insurance programs.
  • Experience in contract review for insurance and indemnification provisions.

 

Assets
  • Experience in the public sector or university setting.
