Full-Time Manager, Emerging Groups

Job Description

Role Summary

Reporting to the Managing Director, the Manager, Emerging Groups is responsible for the management of Emerging Groups underwriting staff and execution of operational business plan. Emerging Groups comprises of multiple business units including Professional Liability, Environmental Liability, and Special Risks. The Manager will oversee underwriting acumen including risk appetite, data quality and service levels. The Manager is also responsible for the achievement of team goals for profitability and the production of desirable business. Demonstrated success at managing multiple and changing priorities and delivering results is critical.

Job Responsibilities

Underwriting:

  • Maintain the long-term profitability of a significant portfolio of accounts; the ability to successfully negotiate terms, conditions and pricing to achieve new business, renewal and profitability targets; conduct price monitoring, risk selection and data quality performance reviews
  • Drive best practice in pricing, portfolio management and operational efficiencies
  • Understand and monitor trends and developments identifying areas of concern regarding loss ratios, risk trends, or other discrepancies
  • Participate in audits as required and oversee the completion of file reviews and audits
  • Identifies, investigates, and develops new business/expansion opportunities for assigned segment
  • Strengthen technical expertise of underwriting team to maximize profitability of business by balancing rate and retention

Sales:

  • Develop and maintain a professional relationship with brokers and markets to enhance understanding of the target market and to contribute to quality service, problem solving, and risk selection
  • Collaborate with brokers and clients to assist in business retention and client satisfaction; develop relationships with brokers to ensure the delivery of efficient and focused targeted sales activities to brokers
  • Oversee the provision of quality client service; oversee problem resolution between brokers and underwriting staff
  • Forge new business relationships and solicit new business opportunities
  • Review broker evaluations, analyze results and maintain a complete understanding of brokers
  • Maintain knowledge of industry trends, developments, and regulatory changes including competitive analysis and information, and ensure all necessary broker management systems are updated and current
  • Work closely with the Director, Underwriting to identify new product needs and develop new strategic programs to meet market demands
  • Manage and monitor domestic and international underwriting contracts
  • Ensure that product changes or enhancements are communicated to brokers and/or clients in a timely manner

Coaching/Mentoring:

  • Provide effective daily leadership, coaching and motivation of staff to ensure service and quality objectives are met; mentor and train underwriters and support staff
  • Provide individual and team feedback for the purpose of coaching staff to meet or exceed planned results in the areas of price adequacy, risk selection, data quality, and service levels
  • Oversee the completion of peer file reviews and audits
  • Act as a resource on risks, within own established authority levels
  • Advance the technical development of front line staff through clear communication of technical expectations and ongoing training / knowledge sharing
  • Commitment to regular in-person visits with direct reports in offices outside of the Managers own

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Designations: CIP and/or FCIP
  • Licenses: Provincial License or eligibility for obtaining
  • Active Industry Participation
  • 2 – 3 years of leadership/management experience
  • Diverse casualty insurance experience across multiple disciplines
  • Ability to work across multiple disciplines and create strategies for cohesion
  • Strong knowledge of domestic and international casualty markets
  • Strong broker relationships
