PURPOSE OF POSITION:

The Farm Underwriter is responsible for underwriting applications for farm insurance in accordance with company policies and procedures.  This includes reviewing policy applications, endorsements and renewals and then applying underwriting methodology to evaluate the degree of risk involved, and suggest recommendations, endorsement or rejection of the application.  Successful candidates will demonstrate proficient farm knowledge and provide a high level of customer service to our broker network.

KEY RESPONSIBILITY AREAS:

  • Review and assess Commercial Farm risk and process Commercial farm endorsements
  • Review and assess policy applications, endorsements and renewals
  • Act as lead for Guidewire issues for Farm Lite and Farm Gen Business
  • Manage all JIRA tickets for Farm Underwriting
  • Assist with training new hires.
  • Apply effective pricing and underwriting practices
  • Cultivate relationships with brokers
  • Analyze portfolio and provide recommendations to minimize risk
  • Participate in training and development opportunities
  • Provide technical advice, training and on-boarding to all levels of the underwriting team, including peer file reviews
  • Participate in insurance industry and broker events
  • Enter policies and understand policy details by checking the policy on the policy management system;
  • Assess and accept risks that fall within the Company’s underwriting guidelines to determine endorsement status, including claims history, property condition, coverage requested, etc.
  • Decline or adjust coverage and rates to risks that do not meet eligibility requirements in accordance with company procedures and guidelines
  • Operate within approved binding authority and seek approval when risk exceeds that scope
  • Represent Red River Mutual to the broker network, customers, the public and other external sources in person and through digital communications such as, writing, fax, telephone or by e-mail

 QUALIFICATION AND SKILLS:

  • Proven team work and collaboration skills
  • Strong written and oral communication and English language skills
  • High level of organization and attention to detail
  • Strong decision making skills
  • Proficient computer skills including the Microsoft Office program suite
  • Creative and innovative and shows flexibility;
  • Highly customer service oriented
  • High School Diploma
  • CIP designation enrollment is considered an asset
  • Post-secondary education in business, agriculture or related field considered an asset
  • Existing Insurance and/or underwriting experience an asset
