SMI is looking for a permanent, full-time Underwriter to join our growing team. Reporting to the Underwriting Supervisor, the successful candidate will be responsible for reviewing, evaluating, rating and processing new business, renewals and revisions for risks complex in nature.
The successful candidate will have a minimum two years related insurance experience along with the completion of at four Insurance Institute courses and a positive commitment towards the completion of the Chartered Insurance Professional (CIP) designation. The individual must have knowledge of policy rating and underwriting practices, excellent communication skills as well as the ability to lead, motivate and train other employees. The ability to establish and maintain effective relationships and to deliver quality service are also essential skills required for this position.
As Farm/Commercial Underwriter YOU Will Be Responsible For:
• Reviewing applications, renewals and revisions to existing policies for insurance to determine the nature and degree of non-standard and/or problematic risks. Researching and obtaining additional information on risk if required.
• Determining if risk is acceptable, is acceptable with restrictions, or should be declined based on analysis and evaluation of all information pertinent to the risk within the authority limit guidelines of this position.
• Determining action required to improve risk and recommends restrictions to coverages or revisions to deductibles or premiums based on analysis of the risk.
• Determining appropriate rates, applying applicable discounts and surcharges and calculating premiums.
• Negotiating with brokers as to the conditions, limitations, rates and premiums to apply.
• Determining percentage of involvement in subscription policies.
• Processing new applications, renewals, revisions, cancellations and quotes.
• Answering inquiries orally and/or in writing and acts as a technical resource to brokers, insureds, and other employees on policy exclusions, wordings, coverages, and premiums.
• Developing correspondence to request information and to explain underwriting requirements and decisions.
• Training, reviewing and approving the work of less senior underwriting and clerical staff.
• Performing quality control checks.
• Testing the accuracy of information systems including updates to the system.

This unionized position offers an annual salary range of $52,107 – $ 71,578, a comprehensive benefits package, a fun and inclusive work environment, professional development opportunities and the potential for further advancement within the company.
