Department overview

Professional & Financial Risks (PFR) in Canada focus on Canadian domiciled business and can deploy capacity of $15M on any one risk. Underwriters have a flexible and innovative approach to underwriting that ensures that we can provide the product required for our customers. This role is based in the PFR team with special focus on supporting and developing out our strategy within the cyber and technology sector.

Duties and accountabilities

The successful candidate will:

  • Work with the PFR Canada Product Line Leader, senior management and actuarial to implement the underwriting strategy and keep them informed of progress and developments
  • Provide technical leadership for underwriting/marketing of Cyber Liability and Tech E&O
  • Confidently and positively demonstrate the discipline of our chosen underwriting approach
  • Effectively balance the demands of underwriting with the challenges of maintaining customer relationships
  • Demonstrate sound and conservative underwriting judgement whilst continuously scrutinizing performance against plan and adjust approach if required
  • Prioritise the team’s underwriting strategy and diligently adhere to it at all times
  • Apply appropriate underwriting practices including authority and guidelines control
  • Apply appropriate risk management practices including aggregations and guideline controls and any measures required to limit Markel’s exposure
  • Travel to represent Markel as required by PFR Management
  • Actively keep knowledge and skills up-to-date through courses and seminars, where appropriate.

Skills, knowledge and experience

The successful candidate will have the following qualifications:

  • Minimum of 2 years of cyber and/or tech E&O underwriting experience
  • Successful completion of a university or college level degree
  • Have a detailed understanding of the Canadian cyber and technology insurance market, and relationships with key broking partners
  • Demonstrate strong numerical and analytical ability
  • Excellent IT skills including Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Ability to travel several days at a time, several times a year, in order to build relationships and prospect business.
