Job Description

Our client is an Insurance Company underwriting a diverse portfolio of commercial insurance and reinsurance business on a world-wide basis.  They market and underwrite specialty insurance products and programs to a variety of niche markets.

Position Available:  TORONTO, MONTREAL, CALGARY AND VANCOUVER

The successful candidate will:

Work with the Assistant Vice President – Central Region, Product Line Leader, senior management and actuarial to implement the underwriting strategy and keep them informed of progress and developments
Underwrite and service a growing book of business, including risk selection, coverage negotiation and pricing adequacy on new and renewable business, all in accordance with designated underwriting authorities and company guidelines.
Provide technical leadership for underwriting/marketing of products
Confidently and positively demonstrate the discipline of our chosen underwriting approach
Effectively balance the demands of underwriting with the challenges of maintaining customer relationships
Demonstrate sound and conservative underwriting judgement whilst continuously scrutinizing performance against plan and adjust approach if required
Reviews and processes changes on existing accounts to maintain compliance with policy conditions and company underwriting philosophy.
Always prioritize the team’s underwriting strategy and diligently adhere to it
Partner with peers in other product lines to leverage multi-line opportunities.
Apply appropriate underwriting practices including authority and guidelines control
Apply appropriate risk management practices including aggregations and guideline controls and any measures required to limit exposure
Travel to represent Company as required by Management
Actively keep knowledge and skills up to date through courses and seminars, where appropriate.
Maintain market intelligence, business insurance trends and industry knowledge.

Skills, knowledge and experience

The successful candidate will have the following qualifications:
2-4 years’ underwriting experience – property and casualty
Sports and leisure experience an asset
University/College degree; CIP or FCIP designation.
Expertise and depth in policy wordings, forms and applicable coverages.
Superior relationship management skills proven through established broker relationships and demonstrated track record of generating new business premium.
Strong administrative skills and highly detail oriented.
Excellent presentation skills — comfortable speaking in front of small and large groups.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to work independently and as a contributing team member.
Ability to deliver results even when working to meet tight deadlines.
Strong business acumen and capable of representing the organization externally.
Bilingualism (French/English) an asset
