Economical is pursuing demutualization — the process to become a public company. Demutualization is an exciting and historic opportunity for Economical as it will be the first demutualization of a P&C company in Canada. The AVP, Personal Insurance Product and Underwriting role (“AVP, Underwriting”) is an exceptional opportunity to make a critical contribution to Economical’s transformative growth plan as it pursues the path of becoming a public company. Reporting to the Vice President, Personal Insurance Product & Underwriting (“Vice President, Underwriting”), the AVP, Underwriting will have primary accountability for leading the day-to-day product and underwriting planning, analysis and operations across the personal insurance lines of business.
The AVP, Underwriting will have deep technical underwriting knowledge and expertise, and an understanding of developing underwriting systems and products within regulatory frameworks. She/he will have a solid understanding of key underwriting rules, policies and their impact while ensuring the continued development of innovative, profitable and market-leading underwriting products and services. The AVP, Underwriting will support Economical’s transformative business strategy by reviewing and revising underwriting rules, processes and systems to respond to the changing market and business conditions, ensuring Economical’s continued leadership in the market.
Trusted, transparent, accountable and dependable, the AVP, Underwriting is an inspiring, dynamic, agile and technical leader. With 5 – 10 years of personal or commercial insurance underwriting experience, she/he has effectively leveraged data analytics to develop, monitor and forecast insurance underwriting products. Informed of insurance market trends, drivers and competitors, she/he recognizes and responds to unique opportunities while staying sensitive to legal, regulatory and reputational risks. She/he has strong business, operational and financial acumen, using technology and its data to enable underwriting efficiency and profitability. She/he will have proven leadership experience building and leading teams within a culture of collaboration and accountability. Public company, M&A, financial services, technology and/or public sector experience is an asset, as is an MBA, CRM, CIP, FCIP, FCIA and/or professional accounting designation.
