Casualty Manager, Head Office
Purpose of Position:
This position plays a key role in the implementation of Head Office underwriting strategies, policies, programs, projects and services required to build the core institution business, in addition to other related commercial/property business.
Functional Relationships:
The position is required to build and maintain the following relationships:
Internal: Head Office Underwriting Team, Regional Vice Presidents, Senior Management Team and National Underwriting Team
External: Key brokers, clients, reinsurers
Key Accountabilities and Responsibilities:
- Implement underwriting strategy: philosophy, authority, control and accountability.
- Build trilateral relationships, negotiating sound business deals through trilateral relations with: customers, brokers, and reinsurers
- Respond to specific underwriting referrals from Regional Vice Presidents and underwriting staff
- Determine whether submissions meet the company’s eligibility requirements
- Recognize hazards unique to each risk and apply sound underwriting judgement
- Provide feedback and recommendations to improve processes and results
- Complete underwriting quality reviews and provide effective feedback to Regional Vice Presidents and Head Office Underwriting Manager
- Maintain current high degree of expertise in the designated speciality area and remain current and up-to-date with appropriate legislation, business conditions and competitive environment
- Provide timely guidance and advice to the Regions on complex business risks
- Train, coach and act as an internal ‘consultant’ to staff and other stakeholders
Skills, Education, Knowledge and Experience:
- University degree, college diploma or equivalent experience that provides a basis to independently manage complex work
- CIP/FCIP coupled with 8-10 years of progressive commercial property and casualty underwriting experience
- Understanding of financial management methods, the nature of insurance risk and reinsurance programs
- Experience in underwriting, commercial insurance product design, production and delivery, calculating and directing appropriate pricing and underwriting coverage, in a manner that aligns to the corporate underwriting strategy
- Sound broker management
- Excellent communication, analytical, organizational, negotiating and interpersonal skills
- Well developed business acumen and skills to build trilateral relationships, negotiating sound business deals with multiple constituencies: brokers, reinsurers, and end customers
- Manage programs and projects on-time and on-budget
- Exposure to company’s core segments would be an asset
